One of the Lewiston Maine mass shooting, 23-year-old Justin Karcher was having a pleasant evening at Schemengees Bar & Grille in Lewiston when a shooter began firing on Wednesday evening, his mother said.

According to Karcher’s mother, he was struck four times and leaving him in critical condition.

On October 25, 2023, a mass shooting occurred in two locations in Lewiston, Maine. At least 16 people were killed, and dozens more were injured. The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office released a photo of a person of interest, while a manhunt is ongoing.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., police, fire, and rescue personnel arrived at Sparetime Recreation, a family restaurant and bowling alley, after a report of an active shooter. Shortly after, a second shooting was reported at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, 4 miles (6.4 km) from Sparetime. Gunshots were reported at a Walmart distribution center in the area, but a shooting did not occur there, according to the company.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police alerted residents of an active shooter at approximately 8:00 p.m. The sheriff’s office released images of the shooter using a “high-powered assault-style rifle”.

The Central Maine Medical Center began coordinating with local area hospitals to take in victims. Several victims were taken to Maine Medical Center, the state’s largest medical center; the hospital is on lockdown.

It was originally reported that at least 22 people were killed, and 50–60 people were injured, although some sources later reported that the death toll was between 15 and 20 and that 50 people were injured. Not all of the injured were shot; some were injured due to stampeding.

The Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston stated that it was coordinating with area hospitals to receive patients in response to a “mass casualty, mass shooter event”.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are providing assistance to local authorities.

A person of interest was identified by the police but not labeled a suspect. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the person of interest remains at large and is “armed and dangerous”. Pictures of the person of interest, a white male, and a white 2013 Subaru Outback connected to the shootings were released by the Sheriff’s Office in an effort to identify the person.

The person of interest is now identified as Robert Card.

According to a state police bulletin, the person of interest is a firearms instructor trained by the military and was committed for two weeks to a mental health facility in summer 2023. The vehicle that was being sought was located in Lisbon, Maine.
