It is with profound sadness that we report the unexpected passing of Madison Argo, the director of Wheeler High School’s esteemed band program. Madison, who had recently begun his second year in this role, leaves a void that will be deeply felt within the Wheeler High School community.
The Cobb County School District has confirmed Madison Argo’s passing, but as of now, no further details have been provided regarding the circumstances.
In response to inquiries from East Cobb News, a district spokesperson expressed their condolences, stating, “We mourn along with the Wheeler High School community following the passing of the school’s band director. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who are grieving. School counselors will continue to be available to support students and staff during this difficult time.”
It’s important to note that Cobb schools were on fall break during this week, and the Wheeler marching band also had the week off due to the Wildcats football team’s inactivity.
Madison Argo led Wheeler’s band program, which encompasses the Wildcat Pride marching band, three large ensemble classes, colorguard, drumline, jazz band, and pep band.
According to his official school biography, Argo arrived at Wheeler after holding a similar position at a high school in Texas. He also served as an associate band director at Whitewater High School in Fayetteville.
Madison Argo, a 2014 graduate of Auburn University, where he served as the drum major, furthered his education by earning a master’s degree in fine arts from Ball State University in 2021.
Argo’s dedication to music extended beyond the classroom, as he performed with the Cobb Wind Symphony and Emory Wind Ensemble and was an active member of various music education organizations. Additionally, he contributed to the music staff for the Macy’s Great American Marching Band in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The Wheeler PTSA expressed their condolences, stating that Madison Argo “made a positive impact on the lives of so many students and staff during his time at Wheeler, and he will be deeply missed.”
Lassiter High School’s band program also offered their sympathies on their Facebook page, describing Madison as “a diligent educator, passionate musician, and a friend to many.”
The Ball State band program remembered Argo as “a dedicated member of the BSU staff and a tremendous asset to the BSU Band program,” and noted his contagious sense of humor and boundless energy.
