The Rivals.com recruiting network rated Mixon as a five-star recruit and the top running back in the country. He made his college football commitment to the University of Oklahoma in January 2014.

He had 47 offers but finally decided to go with Oklahoma instead of Alabama, California, Wisconsin, and UCLA. From 2014 to 2016, Mixon attended and played college football for the University of Oklahoma. After being charged with a minor assault in October 2014, he was barred from playing for the Oklahoma football team 2014.

Some analysts and scouts evaluated Mixon as a first-round prospect coming out of college, but because to his past, they predicted that he would be chosen in the third or fourth round. He was rated the fourth-best running back by Sports Illustrated, the third-best back by Pro Football Focus, and the fifth-best back by NFLDraftScout.com.

Mixon began the 2018 season with 95 rushing yards, a rushing score, and five receptions for 54 yards in a 34-23 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the season opener. Mixon sustained a knee injury in the following game against the Baltimore Ravens, forcing him to exit the game many times.

Mixon recorded 145 scrimmage yards in the Bengals’ season-opening 23-20 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the 42-21 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 9, Mixon carried for 153 yards, had 58 receiving yards, a career-high, and a franchise record five touchdowns. For his performance against the Panthers, he was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.
